Before & After - 4 Birchstone Hill Road

If you read our previous Before and After blog, then you know that small changes can make a tremendous difference when updating your home. However, who doesn’t love a good total transformation? This property’s before and after photos are so remarkable that they’re probably worthy of a spot on HGTV…

We originally sold this house back in November of 2016 to buyers that had ambitious plans, to say the least. New owners, Kaileen and Ryan Burke, described the original feel of the home as “dark” and “closed off”. However, as an artist, Kaileen felt inspired by the glimmer of sunlight peeking through the skylights. As is the case with her artwork, her design inspiration came from the peaceful, light-filled, neutral vibes found in nature and landscaping. Her goal was to combine an amalgam of rustic, contemporary, and traditional elements to create a space that felt comfortable, relaxing, and timeless. Kaileen and Ryan did so in three stages…

  1. The first stage included the opening of walls between the kitchen/dining room, dining/living room, and office/kitchen. They also chose to elevate the sunken part of the living room floor to encourage a more open, cohesive feel.

  2. Phase two was focused on aesthetic upgrades – fresh paint with neutral tones, whites, and greens to mimic the brightness of the outdoor landscaping. Wide plank neutral floors helped to expand and lighten the space. Finally, some custom woodworking in the dining room added a sense of sophistication and design.

  3. The third stage included a full kitchen renovation and expansion. Kaileen and Ryan decided to double the size of the space and build a new island with a beautiful 10-foot granite countertop.

All in all, the Burke’s sunk about $60,000-$70,000 into the renovations. If not for some exciting life changes, they would have preferred to stay in the home forever! Fortunately, a new happy couple will call this place their home in just a few months time!
