ROC Spotlight Series - Adrian Hale

What are you reading?

I’m reading a book written by a long-time mentor and friend named Marty Medina titled Amerita. It’s a fictional story based in post-WWIII America, whether dystopian or utopian I still haven’t concluded. To give you a brief synopsis of the book without giving away the main plot, Americans begin to overwhelmingly reject the two party system in favor of a third way that fundamentally changes the very nature of our country. To find out what that third way is, you’ve got to get the book!

What are you listening to?

What I’m listening to depends completely on what I’m doing and where I am. I love to work out so when I’m in the gym or running I like to listen to either really fast paced dance music, dub step or EDM. That can be anything from artists like deadmau5 and Kaskade or DJ remixed tracks by pop artists like Michael & Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, or Madonna. But when I was a Marine in Afghanistan I would listen to music that would hype me up like Jadakiss’s, “We Gon’ Make It”, Rage Against the Machine’s, “Bulls on Parade”, or Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers”. When I am reading, I like to listen to film scores. My favorite film composer by far is Thomas Newman. Some favorites by Newman are Angels in America and Road to Perdition.

What is the last album or song that you downloaded?

The last complete album that I downloaded was so long ago, I can’t even remember. However, the last couple of songs that I’ve downloaded are a little bit of everything. On New Year’s Day, I kicked off 2017 with Phresher’s “Wait a Minute”, the version with 50 Cent and Remy Ma. I also love Radiohead, and just recently downloaded their song “True Love Waits”. Ever since the Grammy’s, I haven’t been able to stop listening to Chance the Rapper’s, “No Problem”. Last but not least, Solange Knowles’s album, A Seat At The Table, had a bunch of good songs. My favorites were, “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “Cranes In The Sky”.

Do you have a favorite podcast(s)?

I like the NPR podcasts - they have a lot of good ones. I listen to everything from Fresh Air to the TED hour. I also have a really cool app called “On Being”. It can be best described as TED meets NPR. If you haven’t checked it out, I recommend that you do.

What are you currently watching on TV?

Well, I’m watching a couple of shows right now. I just recently started watching a new show on BET called The Quad. The Quad is a show about HBCU life at a college in Atlanta. Before that, I was really impressed by the New Edition Story, which was a made-for-TV movie that chronicled the lives and careers of the members of the R&B group New Edition. However, I am secretly a reality TV junkie. I like Bravo TV shows like Married to MedicineThe Real Housewives of Atlanta, and Top Chef. I am also a Netflix fan. My favorite show on Netflix so far has been The OA. I also liked Luke Cage, Stranger Things, and House of Cards (Hey, what can I say? I was a Poli Sci major).

What is the last movie you saw?

The last movie I saw was Get Out. I went to see it with my heart Reggie. We were amazed at how good the movie really was. I don’t really like horror movies but Reggie does, so after he convinced me to go I was thoroughly impressed by the plot and story line. There is so much more going on in that movie than just killing and screaming. Watching it was a total mind game.

Who are you following on Twitter?

Besides following his Royal Highness, King Lebron James himself, I use Twitter to stay informed and up-to-date on what’s happening in the world. That includes following a slew of news reporters and hosts like Evan Dawson and Jennifer Lee, economists like Paul Krugman, and even politicians like Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders.

How do you spend your Sundays?

On the Sundays that I don’t decide to go to the gym, I’ve learned how to enjoy doing nothing. When I was younger in the Marine Corps I learned how to appreciate personal time when I could do whatever, I, wanted to do. Now nothing beats a Sunday when I can just relax with my heart and watch a good movie.
