In case you haven’t noticed, an epidemic has swept the nation, causing millions of TV-hungry spectators to develop a zealous fixation with shows like HGTV’s Fixer Upper and Rehab Addict. I get it – who doesn’t love a good renovation story? Taking something that was once dilapidated or aesthetically displeasing and making it new again is undoubtedly an acquired skill. Admittedly, this obsession may have more to do with HGTV’s sweetheart, Joanna Gaines and her charming farmhouse-chic aesthetic and impeccably groomed family… Nonetheless, we’ve decided to join in on the fun! Our new series will highlight some incredible people and their fascinating restoration projects.
We’re kicking this series off with some new friends who came to us after reading several of our Home Highlights. Their spectacular lower level renovation – which includes a fully stocked bar/kitchen and a theater room that blows most AMC’s out of the water – actually inspired us to start this series. After a quick glance at the pictures below, I’m certain you’ll see why…
Upon entry into their lower level, I found myself having to blink a couple of extra times. I thought that perhaps I had fallen, hit my head, and stumbled into a local restaurant. Certainly this impeccable bar couldn’t be hidden beneath a residential home… After gaining some clarity, I discovered that this bar and kitchen combo is entirely functional, fully accessorized, and open for business! With two full kegs of Magic Hat and Stella Artois, all that the owners are missing is some good booze – but don’t fret, their Stock the Bar party will take care of that!
When talking about the renovation of their lower level, the owners described wanting something unique and completely out of the box. I’m pretty sure that a theater room that seats twelve, has an old telephone booth housing DVDs, and is lined in stone, wood, and plush carpet, really does the trick! Although their kids used the once empty basement to roller skate and ride their bikes, I think it’s safe to assume that they’re pleased with the upgrade…
Talk about unique… If the devil is in the detail, then he is alive and well in this room! The light fixtures in this bath/spa combo are old water spigots, the urinal is a half keg, and the sink is an old wine barrel. The three-in-one shower was also described as their own, personal “time machine.” It can transform itself into a shower, dry sauna, or wet sauna, has a built-in TV and radio, and comes with color changing lights for whatever mood you’re in that day!
If you thought that was impressive, just imagine what it will look like when it’s done… The owners described the walk out portion of their lower level as a continuous work in progress. Eventually, it will include a brick pizza oven, an enchanted garden, and four rows of Concord grape vines. Incredible! If you have a renovation story that you think is worthy of highlighting, or know of someone who does, feel free to let us know!
