ROC Spotlight Series - Jonathan Binstock

What are you reading?

Right now I’m going back through the catalog of Richard Price novels. I’m not the kind of reader who goes deep on individual authors as a regular habit, but I really do get a thrill out of his books. I recently finished his first, The Wanderers (1974), and now I’m starting Freedomland (1998). The Whites, Lush Life, Clockers: I loved them all. No one does dialogue like Richard. No one. Through the spoken word he opens up a world of psychology and reveals the truth behind the news we read about in the papers.

What are you listening to?

I’ve been enjoying going back to Love and Rockets. I was a big fan in college, having followed leader Daniel Ash from Bauhaus through Tones on Tail and then onto Love and Rockets, but I checked out after their first few albums. You know, "I liked the early stuff, before they became popular." It turns out one of their last albums, Sweet F.A. (1996), is one of their best. It’s like I discovered a long-lost friend that I never met. I really dig Salvia Plath’s album (whoever they are), The Bardo Story. A psychedelic throwback that really puts me in the mood. Oh, and I love the band Beirut. Everything. Oh, and I love Kendrick Lamar.

What is the last album or song that you downloaded?

Nick Cave’s latest studio album, Push the Sky Away, is my latest download. Masterful. His gothic intensity frightens me, and then I melt at the faintest scent of sweetness that bubbles up from below. He’s a killer.

Do you have a favorite podcast(s)?

NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Love it. I also listen to NPR One, which is an app not a podcast, I think. It’s great when I can’t get the news on WXXI.

What are you currently watching on TV?

I just finished Narcos. I’m working through Louis CK, and I recently discovered BoJack Horseman because someone came to the Museum of the Dead Halloween party at the MAG dressed up as a pink cat, although I couldn’t tell that she was a pink cat because cat’s aren’t pink. I was like, "what are you?" And the young woman responded, "I’m Princess Carolyn, the pink Persian cat from the show BoJack Horseman. Haven’t you ever watched BoJack Horseman?!?!" I was like, “no.” So I watched it. I think I like it. I’m not sure. But at least now I know what millenials are watching, or at least one of them.

What is the last movie you saw?

I saw the documentary Amy (2015) about Amy Winehouse on a recent flight from Houston. Great talent. Great voice. But I am reconfirmed in personal taste that all my favorite singers can’t sing.

Who are you following on Twitter?

I’m more attentive to Instagram than Twitter. I follow Zurburan1, which is a terrific feed of international street art. Photographer Stephen.Shore has a feed that makes me feel like I’m always carrying around my own store of great art. And SteveCarter is a local favorite with over 60K followers. He takes beautiful photos and then I can talk to him about them when I run into him at the Public Market.

How do you spend your Sundays?

Bikram yoga, a walk in Mendon Ponds Park, and a Sunday night homemade hotdog at Cure at the Public Market.
